Room 422 is sweeping every dorm room in the southeast and even some all across the U.S. At the start of this school year, I couldn't get on instagram or Facebook without seeing the beautiful designs of Room 422. From Georgia, Alabama, Texas and even in the Bronx, NY. Frances Lacefield is the founder and designer behind the popular headboards and accent pillows, and we are sitting down with her to get a glimpse into her company. Great news, you can get her creative and chic designs for your own bedroom! Take a look and see what it's all about...
Meet Frances! The master mind behind the booming dorm room design business!
I grew up in Atlanta and went to University of Alabama! Growing up I was surrounded by a passion for all things creative. I was immersed in sewing, art, painting and photography. I get creativity easy, honestly. My mom is the most creative person I know! She is beyond talented! My family and friends have been my biggest supports, and I am forever grateful!!!
Room 422. How did it start? What inspired the name?
The summer of 2010 I was getting ready to head off to The University of Alabama for my freshman year. My mom and I had a blast creating bedding for my freshman dorm room. And that was the beginning of it! From there I always thought there could be a business for dorm bedding! Now it is Room 422! Contrary to what most people think 422 was not my dorm room, it is my birthday, April 22:)!!
What does your typical dorm room package include?
At Room 422 you can buy everything individually! You can get almost everything you need for your dorm room! A typical package if you wanted to deck out your entire dorm room would be a headboard, 2-4 accent pillows, coverlet, duvet, blanket, bedskirt (to hide all your storage!), and a storage cube.
When you decided to start your business, what was the biggest challenge?
There have been many challenges, I think that is just part of starting your own business! For me the biggest challenge was overcoming the fear of failure. I believe in the saying “you never know if you don’t try.” I feel that the best way to learn is from experience. I have made plenty of mistakes and will continue to make mistakes. But I am choosing to learn from them and better myself and Room 422. Every day is an adventure and I am continuously learning new things.
What inspires your designs?
Inspiration is everywhere!!!There are no restraints as to what I draw my inspiration from. Creativity is fueled by many things, nature, travel, textiles and all things colorful! I am inspired by color and patterns and loved translating that into fabric. All my fabrics are named after my friends! I took into account their personalities.
Are you just working with clients in the southeast?
I went on a road trip from Atlanta to Texas having Room 422 trunk shows, spreading the word. This helped expand outside of Georgia. The road trip along with my website created business across the US. I would love to expand and be more prevalent across the country. (maybe even globe one day :)
Your favorite collection/pieces?
This is hard! I love it all! I love the headboards because they are different from any other headboard I have ever seen. They are made of foam and Velcro directly to the wall. It is perfect for dorms! (with all the regulations!)
I also love our deluxe blanket! They are the perfect combo of style and comfort. You have a pretty decorative side with fabric and comfy fleece to snuggle up with on the other side. Best of both worlds! As far as collections of fabrics, this first collection of fabric will always have a special place in my heart. It was my first collection of fabrics I designed. They are all named after my friends. Each fabric has its own personality and style that represents my friends.
I'm obsessed with your collections and wish this had been around when I was in college!! Do you design more than just dorm rooms?
YES!!!!! I have expanded to full, queen and king bedding. (However, we are still working on making a king headboard) Room 422 is great for apartments, homes, guest rooms, second homes, all places that need pillows :)
What was the biggest trend this year for Rom 422?
Neutrals! Grey, tan, white, our leathers (croc, ostrich) were the most popular. Girls are very sophisticated these days!
Something you will do differently next season?
I am going to stock a basic core line to allow me to take more orders for quick shipping. This will help with all those last minute shoppers
Biggest surprise so far?
The biggest surprise has been the daily operations that are required to run a business. Overseeing all aspects of the business has been more than I ever imagined! From designing fabric to creating products to taking orders to customer service to shows to marketing to shipping to accounting, etc. etc. it is CRAZY HECTIC!!! But itis the best kind of crazy and I wouldn’t want it any other way!
Thank you, Frances!! I can't get over how great these rooms look! And I'm excited that you do all sizes of beds... I think my room needs a makeover soon and I know exactly where I'm going when that time comes! Who else is going to Room 422?!
